 By 1772, Pillar Dollars circulated all over the world. Then King Charles III ordered a new design with his portrait on the obverse and the royal shield on the reverse. By then, minting machines struck portraits with tremendous force for high relief and fine detail. The edges were milled with a scalloped design to prevent entrepreneurs from "clipping" them for bits of silver.
